Chapter 15

The viscount was sitting at a table, waiting for someone he was supposed to meet. Taking a sip of the port he had been served, he made a face at the quality of the drink. Obviously, it had been watered down.

The voice of the man he was meeting came from behind him. “Ah, how the mighty have fallen.”

“Keep your opinions to yourself, or you will not be paid the money you desperately need.”

“Yes, we are both in the same situation. You are in worse shape, as you are about to lose your estate and rumor has it you just returned from Darcy empty handed.”

“My cousin is a fool, and did an extremely foolish thing, just before he was to lose Pemberley to my brother.”

“Darcy actually got married? No, that cannot be. I have not heard of it in the papers, and news such as that would have been the talk of town. Who did the hermit finally decide on?”

“Someone unknown. Word in Lambton was that she was found in the river during a storm. Supposedly her carriage was overturned and ended up in the river. A country nobody is what I was told. Now she commands the wealthiest man in England.”

Wickham took a swig of the drink that had been left on the table for him. “So how are we going to use Darcy’s wife to relieve him of his funds? Should I slip into her bed and teach her what a real man can do?”

“No, you will never be able to convince her to go against my cousin. Georgiana is out of the question, as I am certain that my parents and Darcy are keeping her guarded. I should have never said that I could marry that child for her dowry. If I had kept my mouth shut on that matter, I could have seduced her and made her think she loved me. But I lost control when I was speaking with my mother, and the thought escape my mouth.”

“From what I have heard, you did more than speak with your mother.”

“Another mistake. I was furious and allowed my anger to take control. That only infuriated my father. Mother has always been his weakness, whatever she wanted, he has done. She is the one who has convinced Father to stop assisting me. If I had the chance to do it again, Mother would have had an accident.”

Wickham took another drink. “Well, remind me not to come to anger you. If you are willing to kill your own mother to access your father’s coffers, you are truly dangerous.”

“You should remember that for the future. As to my current predicament, I believe my new cousin could find herself assisting us. We should return to Lambton and meet with the new Mrs Darcy. Then, when we have her with us, we can tell Darcy how much it will cost him to have her returned. My cousin will pay, I have no doubt. Then you will have your fee and I can pay off my debts.
